Prof. NEDJELJKO FRANCULA, Honorary Member of the Croatian Cartographic Society

On the 5th Annual Assembly of the Croatian Cartographic Society, Prof. Nedjeljko Francula has been elected an Honorary Member of the Croatian Cartographic Society for his contribution to the development of contemporary Croatian cartography and for his excellence in scientific work and education.

A Call to the Competition

The Barbara Petchenik Award was created by the International Cartographic Association in 1993 as a memorial for Barbara Petchenik, a past Vice president of the ICA and cartographer who worked through her life with maps related to children. The aim of the contest is to promote the creative representation of the world in graphic form by children.

The awards are given every two years during an ICA conference, preferably at least one for each continent, with special consideration to the age of the child producing the drawing - map.

The 2007 Dr. Walter W. Ristow prize for academic achievement in the history of cartography and map librarianship

The prize, awarded since 1994, recognizes academic achievement in History of Cartography or Map Librarianship, and honors the legacy of Dr. Walter Ristow, Chief Emeritus of the Geography & Map Division, Library of Congress, and co-founder and first president of the Washington Map Society.

Josip Faricic defended his master thesis "Zadarski otoci na kartografskim prikazima od 16. do pocetka 19. stoljeca" (Islands of Zadar on maps from 16th to beginning of 19th century) on 18 September 2003 at Geographic Department of the Faculty of the Natural Sciences in Zagreb.

Nada Vucetic, PhD will hold the inauguratory lecture on 20 September 2002 at Faculty of Geodesy in Zagreb, classroom 120 with beginning at 11.30 am. The title of lecture is "Generalization in Digital Cartography" ("Generelizacija u digitalnoj kartografiji").


City map of Split prepared by Ivan Tosic and Ivan Stojak was presented on 11 July 2002 at atrium of Art gallery, Split. The map is published by Mogucnosti d.o.o.



Hydrographic Institute of the Republic of Croatia has published a fifth edition of publication Znaci i kratice na hrvatskim pomorskim kartama. The publication is printed at A4 format, it has 96 pages in color and the content is translated and supplemented content of publication International Chart Series - INT1 - Symbols Abbreviations Terms Used on Charts published by International Hydrographic Organization in Monaco.



Hydrographic Institute of the Republic of Croatia is planning to print city map of Split in scale 1:15 000 (A0 format) and publication Peljar za male brodove (A4 format, about 400 pages) till september 2002.


Vesna Posloncec-Petric, BSc, will defend her master thesis A comparison of software packages for automatic hill shading on 19 June 2002 at Faculty of Geodesy, University of Zagreb.


Ivana Racetin, BSc, will defend her master thesis Terminology of Modern Maritime Cartography on 13 June 2002 at Faculty of Geodesy, University of Zagreb.


24 May 2002. The lectures from Cartographic Heritage (Kartografsko nasljede) now can be taken at a postgraduate studies at the Faculty of Geodesy, Zagreb. The professor is Miljenko Lapaine, PhD.

9 May 2002. During the Week of Archive the map exhibition "Old maps of Island Cres" is reopened. The exhibition can be visited in State Archive in Rijeka, Nikola Host Park 2, from 8 am to 4 pm. Exhibition will be closed on May 25, 2002. The exhibition catalogue can be bought at a special price of 50 KN.


8 May 2002. Promotion of the book "Katastar Istre 1817-1960" ("Cadastre of Istria 1817-1960") was held in State Archive in Pazin as a part of the Week of Archive. The book includes history of cadastre in Istria and list of materials that all institutions hold with index of toponims in two languages. The book can be bought in Croatian State Archive in Zagreb. Price is 100 KN.
